The Gold Sheet

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

*SOUTH FLORIDA 23 - Kansas 20—Jayhawks have now covered a
bankroll-swelling 16 of their last 19 vs. spread! And nifty KU jr. QB Reesing (32 of 38 for 412 yards) was near flawless during last week’s whitewash of La. Tech. USF counterpart Grothe a plenty resourceful field general himself, however, and Bulls are 8-2 against line their last 10 in front of burgeoning crowds at Tampa. Must get at least a FG to support Jayhawks vs. speedy, swarming USF stop unit. CABLE TV—ESPN2

(967) SEA Mariners
(968) LA Angels
Take "Under"
Mariners/Angels under the total: A glance at the pregame lineup card this week for the Mariners provided a sneak peek at what is to come. The second baseman was batting cleanup for the first time in his major-league career. A reserve middle infielder from Class AAA was serving as the designated hitter, while another minor-league call-up was playing third base, all because veteran Adrian Beltre is sidelined a few days while contemplating what to do about a persistently sore thumb. Beltre is one of the offensive and defensive cogs of this team, and when he's not around, things get dicey indeed because there's little left to shoulder his load for too long. The result was a loss where they scored 3 runs against the bad Texas Rangers pitching staff. Now they face the best staff in the AL. The Angels will have little trouble with this Triple AAA Seattle lineup. But will the Angels score? Seattle starter Brandon Morrow has been sensational, with a 1.42 ERA, fanning 55 in 44 innings. The Angels' Torii Hunter is injured and suspended, while Francisco Rodriguez is closing in on the saves title. All in all, don't look for many runs in this one. Play the Mariners/Angels under the total.

(915) SF Giants
(916) SD Padres
Take "Under"
This is the toughest park to hit and score runs in in the majors. There are two decent pitchers on the mound facing the two worst offenses in the NL. The Padres have averaged just 3 runs the last four games. In a typical defeat this week, after Brian Giles' leadoff double in the first, Derek Lowe allowed the Padres only two more hits before being driven from the game by a Kevin Kouzmanoff comebacker off his leg in the sixth. 14 Padres have made their major league debut this season, many on a young, erratic offense. The offense will struggle this game against San Fran lefty Jonathan O. Sanchez, who has a 3.71 ERA his last three starts. He's faced the Padres once and fanned 10 in 6 innings (no runs) this season and has a career 1.84 ERA against them. At least San Diego can throw an ace on the hill and Jake Peavy (2.63 ERA), who has a 1.29 ERA his last three starts. He also has a 1.29 ERA against the Giants this season. Don't look for many runs! Play the Giants/Padres under the total.

Atlanta Braves (64-82) at New York Mets (82-63)
(L) Mike Hampton (2-2, 5.60) vs. (L) Johan Santana (13-7, 2.70)

Atlanta has struggle away from home, just 24-48 on the road this season and have been unsuccessful against the Mets in New York. The Braves have dropped the last five meetings in the Big Apple and five of Mike Hampton?s last 7 starts at Shea Stadium. Go with the Mets at home with Johan Santana on the hill. New York has won Santana's last 7 starts and his last four at home.

VEGAS EXPERTS

Chicago Cubs at Houston Astros
Friday, September 12th, 8:05 PM ET

The Astros are playing incredible baseball right now, having won 14 of 15 to quietly move to 13 games over .500, but we think the Cubs got a huge reprieve last night by holding on against the Cards and that will carry them to a win streak of their own. Starter Jason Marquis has been very solid as of late (1.77 ERA L3 starts) and all season on the road (3.05 ERA away from home). Houston counters with relative unknown Alberton Arias, who will be in over his head here.

Play on: Chicago Cubs
